The San Diego trip was somewhat difficult. Thankfully the fires didn't really interfere although the air was nasty with all the soot and smoke from all the fires. We got mistaken for refugees several times - must have been the baby. Sadly, Nathan didn't sleep well at night; I think he was too disoriented. Also, it was a bit of a pain to dash back and forth from the convention center to the hotel room to feed Nathan But my mom was a big help watching Nathan and it was nice to hang out with my brother.
My mom, Nathan and I will probably be in San Diego through Friday for a genetics conference - assuming they haven't evacuated the convention center or closed the roads into town.

Lately I've been feeling stressed and overloaded with the trials and errors of parenting. Friday I took Nathan to the doctor for what turned out to be a staph skin infection. He also got a flu shot and wasn't too pleased about it. But that was nothing compared to last night when, while holding Nathan, talking on the phone, and cooking dinner, I got too close to the stove and let Nathan touch a hot pan. He burned two fingers and howled for a couple hours. I felt so guilty. Gary was kind enough to take him to the doctor this morning who reassured us there was no permanent damage. The doctor said this is just the beginning of Nathan getting into trouble as he starts to explore more. I try to tell myself - if this is the worst accident Nathan ever has, we will be lucky.
I also signed up for toy recall email alerts from the US consumer products safety comission. With all the news lately of lead paint and loose magnets, I'll make myself feel like a better parent when I can say - "Oh good, we don't have those defective toys in the house." Now if only they will recal some transformers...

I'm looking forward to Gary's birthday party tomorrow. It should be a good turnout.
I had a pretty good weekend. Saturday I got to indulge a bit. I slept in while Gary took Nathan to his parents for the morning. Then I spent the afternoon at my coworkers book club; I hadn't been since before Nathan was born. Today was pretty low key, mainly hanging around the house and doing some chores.
I've been feeling more domestic lately. In the last couple weeks I've been trying to cook more "real" food, not just nuking stuff from the freezer. I made kugel, quiche, and tonight I made a baked ziti with veggies. They were all pretty yummy too.
Nathan and I are almost entirely over our colds. I managed to get some antibiotics for my sinus infection from a colleague down the hall. Unfortunately, Nathan is back to waking up several times at night. We indulged him during the week he was sick and now he seems to have forgotten that he can sleep eight or nine hours in a row.
