Equality for all

HRC.gif

In general, I consider myself a blue liberal and I am a strong proponent of same sex marriage. I am glad that there’s been a major shift in public opinion on gay rights in the last few years. Although California passed prop 22 in 2000 defining marriage as between a man and woman only, it is currently being challenged in court.

Now it seems one measure, possibly two, will be showing up on the November 2006 ballot to ammend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage, AND to repeal domestic partner benefits that are currenlty on the books. Interestingly, the two potiential ballot initiatives seem to be competing, and hopfully splitting their base.

We need to do all we can to stop them. I urge you to get involved, learn more, and most of all make sure you get registered and vote. Don't let right wing, religious extremists strip away marriage and civil rights.

Poker Party

Gary and I hosted a poker part at our place Saturday night. We had enough people to start with two tables and most folks played pretty well because it took about two hours to condense down to one table. I have to say I was not in the finals or anywhere close :( I think I'll have to start practicing poker before the next tournament. But a good time was had by all and we got to mix- up some of our groups of friends and have some new people over to the house.

The Capitol Steps

I have enjoyed their occasional NPR satires, but now we can get a weekly parode from The Capitol Steps , the only group in America that attempts to be funnier than the Congress, I love their homage to Alan Greenspan.

Fellowship awards

One of my favorite musicals, Fellowship, has been nominated for three LA weekly awards in the musical categories. I'm not quite sure what this means if they win, especially since the show isn't playing anymore. Perhaps it will encourage them to start a new run, or work on the Two Towers?

Ticket

This weekend went pretty poorly for me. In addition to a sluggish run and disappointing hours wasted fabric shopping for curtains, I got a ticket for my first moving violation Saturday for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign. I can't complain, since I didn't actually completly stop, and it's not the first time I've broken a traffic rule, but it sure made me feel stupid and sad.

Sunday I also screwed things up with a food delivery service I volunteer for - Project Chicken Soup. I was supposed to delivery seven food bags, but only took five. It was such a headache trying to get things straightened out. I just did not have my brain in order.

Sac Skiing

Last weekend Gary and I flew to Sacramento to visit family there. We had a good time and got to enjoy some of our favorite Sac restaurants.

I went cross country skiing on Sunday near Tahoe. It was a beautiful day, not that cold, but the snow conditions were lousy. The trails were very icy so I couldn't get alot of traction. It also meant that when I fell down, I didn't land on soft fluffy powder, but rock solid ice. I must have fallen at least ten times, not even going that fast, but I came home with some nasty bruises. I'm still glad I went; being out in the mountains surrounded by snow, trees, and quite is wonderful, even if I get banged up a bit.

Craig's list

If you ever want to get rid of old furniture or other stuff, Craig's list is the way to go. After we moved in, we replaced the pedistal sinks with countertop sinks. We also bought new couches. But now we have two extra sinks and a large armchair that we don't have any space for.

I put up an add in the Los Angeles recycler first to sell the sinks and chair and then for free. I had a couple folks inquire by email about photos, but that was it.

My mom suggested I post on Craig's list. I decided I'd just post them as "free if you come pick it up," since I had no takers on the recycler. Today I have 130 email responses from Craig's list. I called the first emails and they are coming to pick up the furniture this evening. Wow.
