Roses

This weekend was pretty busy. Saturday after I went for a good jog, Gary and I went to Orange County to play Dungeons and Dragons and Mike's place. It had been over six months since we played last and I forgotten how some of the rules work We also went out to dinner at Maggianos with some of Gary's buddies. It was good to hang out with them and eat (too much) good food.

Sunday stopped by the Home Depot garden center and then I spent a few hours in the yard. I planted seven new rose bushes and a few other new plants. The soil in certain areas was hard clay, so I added in some nice garden/rose soil. Although I don't really consider myself much of a gardener or that I have a green thumb, I would like to make our yard look nice. It was hard work; I hope they don't die.

Muir's call

Last week my mom told me that she got a call at 5am from someone speaking French. She was able to figure out they were trying to reach me. She did her best to explain it was 5 in the morning and that I didn't live there anymore. They call back a few days later, with someone who spoke English. It was my host family in Lyon from when I did a semeter abroad - that was almost ten years ago. Apparenlty they plan a visit to the US.

I gave them a call back, but only left a message on their machine. When I tried to say my phone number in French, I couldn't remeber how to say it, all I could think of were Spanish numbers. It made me realize how rusty my French is an that Spanish seems to be suplanting it. I guess since I've put so much effort into improving my Spanish recently, it is tough for me to remember French. It is strange - I try to think of the word in French, buy only the Spanish word pops up. The same thing used to happens when I'm tried to speak Spanish and a French word popped in to my mind. It is like my brain can only hold one foreign language at a time. The brain is a strange thing.

Dig throught the center of the earth

If you dig through the center of the earth, where would you come out?

I heard about this google map application on NPR.

Dentist

I went to the dentist yesterday. It wasn't bad, although I got pretty streamed trying to find parking. Thankfully the dentist did not find any lurking cavities, gum disease, or other icky tooth stuff. Even though I only had routine cleaning, I still find that it is still so uncomfortable to have some stranger poking, strapping, and generally routing around in your mouth. Also, the dentist I go to is pretty ghetto. I'm waiting for my dental insurance to get upgraded to Delta dental, then I can go to a better place.

Blogosphere

For anyone interested in what is happening in the "blogosphere," blogpulse.com has some neat trend tracking tools to follow what is hot with blog topics.

For example you can track the trends and how much blog time has been devoted to the beef burglar. You can also track more well know items from pop culture such as the rise and fall of Harry Potter this year.

I'm not exactly sure how their methodology works, since none of the referrences to beef burglar point to insignifica, but it still seems interesting.
