While most melanomas are due to environmental factors, up to 10 percent of are associated with familial or inherited syndromes. Risk factors for familial malignant melanoma include two or more melanomas in an individual or a family history of melanoma and pancreatic cancer. Familial melanoma is believed to be caused by mutations in a specific gene called p16.
