Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome (JLNS) is characterized by deafness at birth and heart condition called long QT, which causes irregular heart beats and can lead to sudden death. Treatment involves use of beta blockers and pacemakers. JLNS is an autosommal recessive disease caused by mutations in either the KCNQ1 gene or the KCNE1 gene.
