Enna Burning
Thanks to my recent vacation, I've been going through books faster than usual. On the cruise I read Shannon Hale's
Enna Burning, the sequel to Goose Girl. Like her friend and star of the previous book, Izzy, Enna learns the language of an element. She goes to battle, gets captured, falls in love, out of love, and nearly destroys herself in the process. I enjoyed the story and there were several distinct parts to it. The romance wasn't as natural as her previous stories, but still a good read. I'm defintely going to read the next in the series. I rate it an 8 out of 10.

The Janissary Tree

The Janissary Tree by Jason Goodwin is a historical detective novel. Set in 1836 in Ottoman Empire, the PI is a eunuch charged with investigating a series of murders in the new modern guard and in the harem. The setting is quiet different than any other historical novel I've read and the characters are painted beautifully. The detective story was almost too fasted paced and somewhat hard to follow. I like it enough that I want to read the sequel. I rate it a 7 out of 10.
