Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa Lee takes place in mid 19th century China and is the austensible autobiography of a Upper class woman. It follows her relationship with another woman, a specially contracted best friend, and how their fates go in opposite directions. While the narrator rises from a poor farm family to head woman of the county, her uppercrust friend looses everything. It is bitter and sad tale from the pain of footbinding to the misunderstandings of pride and lost love. I rate it a 5 out of 10.
