Golden Compass

Given to me by my cousin, Mark, this is one of the better fantasy books I've read in a long time. I'd thought I'd heard of all the really good fantasy writers, but I was wrong. The Golden Compass , by Philip Pullman, is the first in a trilogy about a curious, spirited young girl and her destiny to travel different universes. It is a world, almost, but not quite completely unlike our own, where the church seeks to manipulate the forces of magic and science. The only drawback is there is no romance (although some readers might find that a plus). The writing is clever and imaginative. I am looking forward to the next two in the series. Overall a 9-10.
